The Strong develops and offers exhibitions and other mission-driven experiences and services that engage, entertain, and enlighten through the exploration and interpretation of play. The museum’s exhibitions provide a unique blend of artifacts, interpretation, and interactivity. The associate interactive experience developer produces digital-enabled interactive experiences that enhance visitor engagement. This position will contribute to design iteration, prepare concept and working prototypes, develop and install museum interactives, and maintain exhibit-related interactives, including gallery electronics.

This position requires a broad and varied skill set with strong electro-mechanical and programing knowledge, blended with a technical background, maker mindset, and the propensity to learn. The associate interactive experience developer must be willing to learn and apply their knowledge in creative and unique applications.

Essential Duties:
• Maintain, develop, and produce digital-enabled interactive museum experiences.
• Create interactive programs using a wide range of skills, including, but not limited to, physical and digital user interfaces, software and hardware integration, digital game development, electronics development and troubleshooting, audiovisual effects, electronics hacking, and innovative problem-solving.
• Prepare mechanical and electrical components for models or prototypes of concepts to determine functionality and feasibility of plans and ideas. Use hand tools, power tools, and fabricating equipment, including operating metal and plastic-forming equipment.
• Work within an interdisciplinary team environment to develop designs, software, hardware, and prototypes for mixed media experiences and other unique environmental opportunities for impactful guest engagement.
• Encourage exploration of ideas and collaborate in creative brainstorming in the research and development phases. Maintain openness to rapid iteration and short-term problem solving as well as long-term vision development.
• Conduct research to inform design work and interpret the vision and objectives for an interactive experience. Use up-to-date methods to design features that are experiential, engaging, and accessible to diverse audiences.
• Evaluate components and rework or alter models or parts as required to ensure they meet exhibit and safety standards. Apply creative problem solving to unique exhibit interactive and multimedia projects.
• Work with technology specialists and other internal or external vendors to execute production and implementation.
• Wire and solder electrical and electronic connections and components for exhibit interactives.
• Ensure efficient coordination, timely completion, and high quality of assigned projects.
• Maintain knowledge of the rapidly evolving technology and programming tools through ongoing professional development.
• Document detailed descriptions of digital media experience specifications, such as interactive features, activities, software, communication protocols, programming languages, and operating systems software and hardware.
• Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, guests, and vendors. Follow up with individuals as appropriate.
• Look for opportunities to continually improve exhibits-related processes.
• Complete all tasks with strict adherence to all internal and OSHA safety guidelines, policies, and procedures including lock out tag out, use of personal protective equipment, and maintaining an orderly and clean work area.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, software engineering, industrial design, or related field.
• 3-5 years of experience developing creative user interactives, or related field experience.
• Basic understanding of wiring and electrical systems.
• Ability to work with an interdisciplinary professional team, including high-level team leaders.
• This position requires substantial work on a computer and with related equipment. Must have a high degree of comfort and advanced proficiency with computer technology and software, including ActionScript, Arduino, Bash and batch file scripting, BrightAuthor, CSS, Flash, FTP clients, HTML, JavaScript, JSON and related data structures, PHP, Python, VNC, and XML. Demonstrated mastery of design and editing programs within the Adobe Creative Suite. Must be able to learn new systems, as needed.
• Skilled in writing computer programs to successfully integrate digital content with physical interface experiences.
• Must possess a strong outcome-oriented work ethic and ability to meet quality standards for services.

These qualifications are considered a plus:
o Advanced proficiency in Unity preferred.
o Experience with PLC and automation controls.
o Knowledge of DMX lighting controls and programing.

Final candidate must consent to and successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check as conditions of employment.
