GUSS - $35,000.00/Year

Current competitive status as a Senior Student Behavioral Assistant OR this will be a Provisional appointment. As a condition of employment, the employee must take the next exam for Senior Student Behavioral Assistant and be reachable on the Civil Service list of eligible candidates: PLUS EITHER:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's degree (or completion of 60 college credits) PLUS two (2) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of students in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children; OR
B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree, plus one (1) year of experience as defined above; OR,
C. Any equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
-Bachelor's Degree in Counseling/Mental Health/Psychology or related field preferred;
-Required to complete TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) training;
-Experience working with students with disabilities required;
-Experience working with children with behavior challenges;
-Working knowledge of conflict resolution required;
-Must be a proactive team player and problem solver;
-Able to maintain a calm demeanor in stressful situations;
-Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills;
-Ability to effectively use technology;
-Physically able to perform all duties required of the position (with or without reasonable accommodation) including, but not limited to:
-Ability to use approved physical intervention techniques when necessary;
-Lifting and/or carrying (potentially 50 lbs. or greater);
-Standing, stooping, bending, crouching, squatting, kneeling and/or reaching.

All new employees must be fingerprinted and cleared for employment through the NYS Education Department before employment begins. The new employee is responsible for fingerprinting fees ($102.00)

Reports to: Principal
Work Year: 10 Months
Hours: 35 hours/week Monday - Friday (includes 1/2 hour lunch)

Duties to Include the Following:
-Provide and/or assist in Crisis Intervention for students;
-Positively interact with students and staff consistently;
-Provide proactive and reactive support in all areas of the school (classroom, support room, hallway, specials, lunch, etc.);
-Effectively use verbal and non-verbal communication skills;
-Utilize behavior support techniques to help manage aggressive behavior and defuse students in crisis;
-Work collaboratively with team members to effectively support all students in program;
Model techniques to support student behaviors;
-Implement Behavior Intervention Plans with fidelity;
-Support the transition of the student back into the classroom following a crisis;
-Attend team meetings when necessary;
-Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
