Job Description Director of Development
The Director of Development will develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan for Genesee Land Trust including cultivation of existing and new relationships with individuals, community organizations, and local foundations to help support local conservation and a growing organization with major gifts, grants and planned giving while thoughtfully acknowledging individual and community support.

This new full-time development position reports to the Executive Director and oversees, and works very closely with, the Communications and Outreach Manager as part of a cohesive team.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000; benefits include health insurance and SIMPLE IRA (3% Genesee Land Trust match) with flexible working arrangements possible.
• Position is open until filled; applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting May 9th with anticipated start date in late June. Early applications are encouraged.
• Potential is for in office work full-time or a hybrid schedule of remote/in office on a weekly basis. IT support is available for hybrid and remote work.

Director of Development key responsibilities: Fundraising:
• Develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan outlining organization’s annual cycle of fundraising and development, focusing on individual giving, major gifts, local foundations, and planned giving.
• Design and implement, in partnership with Executive Director and Development Committee volunteers, planned engagement of donors, and prospective donors, from diverse sectors in the community to fund projects and programs; managing a portfolio of leadership annual giving and major gift prospects and soliciting gifts.
• Work with program staff to gain insight into potential projects, needs and programs to better cultivate and develop proposals for individuals and local foundations.
• Collaborate with Communications and Outreach Manager to integrate strategic development messages into membership, annual and special appeals, online and monthly giving while thoughtfully acknowledging individual and community support and ensuring a culture of appreciation.
• Manage and promote Legacy giving, ensure systems are in place for long-term records and ongoing appreciation of planned gifts.
• In partnership with the Executive Director, develop and implement specific fundraising and capital campaigns as opportunities arise.
• Develop strategy for Genesee Land Trust special fund- and friend-raising events, donor cultivation events and gatherings in collaboration with the Communications and Outreach Manager, volunteers, and others to create donor loyalty and community relevance. Take lead or recruit leadership for the events.

Organizational Sustainability:
• Work closely with staff, volunteers, supporters and community members to build a welcoming and respected community institution.
• Model donor-centered cultivation, writing, and appreciation; foster appreciation and cultivation of donors by staff throughout the organization.
• Serve as a Genesee Land Trust ambassador, attend special events and community meetings as requested.
• Oversee Communications and Outreach Manager, Database and Administrative Assistant Ensure efficient and comprehensive donor files and organizational database management.
• Provide staff leadership for the Development Committee, Major Gift Sub-Committee and special fundraising/Campaign Committees.
• Actively recruit and support Development Committee members from the community and Genesee Land Trust Board.
• Develop and manage budget related to development, fundraising, appreciation and events.
• Keep current on all aspects of Genesee Land Trust’s mission, strategic plan, land acquisition and stewardship projects and programs and of Land Trust Standards and Practices and nonprofit trends affecting non-profit fundraising, community engagement, and communications. Engage with the local fundraising and philanthropic community.
• Support the Executive Director with related organizational tasks; undertakes other duties as assigned.

• Self-motivated, able to manage multiple projects over long periods of time.
• Good listening skills, responsive and clearly spoken. Positive overall communication style.
• Successful fund-raising experience.
• Demonstrated ability to write in an engaging, warm and donor-centered manner.
• Willing to learn new skills, strategies and techniques; Willingness to fill gaps in proficiency and knowledge base.
• Prior work and/or volunteer experience working with volunteers.
• Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
• Familiarity with donor database systems and understanding of member retention strategies.
• Proficiency in a Microsoft Windows environment and associated computer programs and software, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• Ability to multi-task and provide strategic decision making in a team setting.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work productively with people from racially and culturally diverse backgrounds, including colleagues, donors, members of the public, and project partners.
• Ability to travel throughout Rochester region and work some weekend and evenings is necessary. Must provide current driver’s license and own transportation (mileage reimbursed at Federal rate).
