The newly renovated Woodbury School at The Strong is excited to be expanding its education team to meet the needs of increased enrollment in the 2022-2023 school year. Through the application of the Reggio Emilia child-centered approach to learning, children at Woodbury School learn and develop through playful activities set among the museum's unique, hands-on exhibits. Our preschool and early kindergarten program for three, four, and five-year old children encourages teachers and students to work together to plan the curriculum and facilitate learning through open-ended, inquiry based exploration. Teachers in Woodbury School collaborate in teams of two to foster a stimulating, inviting and nurturing environment for students and to build trusting relationships with families that encourage and engage parents and care-givers as education partners.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Support and implement curriculum that advances the mission of Woodbury School and reflects the Reggio Emilia approach of inquiry-based, experiential learning.
• Support student inquiry and encourage active participation.
• Co-construct the curriculum with students. Supervise, guide, and document child interactions. Prepare daily documentation of classroom highlights to be communicated to parents.
• Assist with students’ educational and behavioral program, including data collection and documentation consistent with the Reggio Emilia approach. Make decisions informed by data and observations.
• Support and promote skill development for individual students or groups of students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities. Collaborate with service providers to coordinate and deliver services for children with special needs.
• Provide a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate, and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play. Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
• Maintain portfolio of student work to track progress. Prepare and present displays of students’ work.
• Identify children showing signs of emotional, developmental, or health-related problems and discuss them with the director of Woodbury School and parents or guardians, as appropriate.
• Maintain positive relationships with parents through ongoing, timely communication. Lead parent-teacher conferences. Discuss their child’s progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children, and suggest ways that they can promote learning and development.
• Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information regarding children in their families both inside and outside the classroom.
• Enforce all administration policies and rules governing students.
• Arrange indoor and outdoor space to facilitate creative play, motor-skill activities, and safety.
• Maintain a safe and sanitary environment that facilitates learning, including sweeping, encouraging handwashing, and supervising the children. Keep first aid supplies on hand at all times.
• Provide direction and guidance to teaching assistants.
• Collaborate with Woodbury School team members to plan, coordinate, support, and attend family meetings and special events.
• Assist the assistant vice president for education with professional development workshops and other in-house meetings, as requested.
• Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence, as necessary.
• Maintain subject matter expertise on the Reggio Emilia approach and best practices in early childhood education.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The candidate may have any combination of education and experience, but should possess the required skills and knowledge for successful performance. Our general minimum requirements are:
• Bachelor’s degree in early childhood or elementary education.
• 2-3 years of early childhood classroom experience.
• Practical knowledge of the Reggio Emilia approach or other progressive, inquiry- or project-based approach to learning.
• Practical knowledge of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences.
• Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification for children, including EPI-Pen training. Maintenance of this certification post-employment is required.
• Ability to complete New York State Mandated Reporter Training.
• Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.
